One of the most asked question regarding save the date wedding magnets and save the dates in general is how you should write the wording. The funny thing is, your wording doesn't really matter all that much, especially if you're going to make save the date photo magnets. The most important aspect of your save the date is the basic information. Once you get that input, you can then play off of that for the personality part of your save the date magnets or cards.
Step 1: Get your basic information in, starting with your names. This is not your formal invite, but a quick hello letting everyone know about the wedding date coming up. So, what do is the basic info that you need to add? First your names. People need to know who the heck they got it from so put your names. I would certainly use your first names; Joe and Sally, Fred & Ginger, Brooks & Dunn...you get it. You could use your last names, but honestly, I think the people you'd be sending these off to will realize who sent it. "John & Sally? Who is this? Smith & Jones? Oh, now I know who that is!" Last names are even more useless if you are using your engagement photo or some other picture of you two together.
Next, the date. If you don't have a specific date in mind yet, don't bother making your funny save the date wedding magnets yet! Sending off a save the date card that says, "We're getting married next June! Save the date!" no one is going to save the entire month for you. And always, always, always list the actual DAY, Saturday, Sunday, Friday, whatever day. The reason behind this is because some people get confused and look at the wrong month or even the wrong year. Most weddings are planned well in a year in advance, so sometimes people will save the date--for the current year! So list the day, because odds are Saturday May 8th, 2010 will not be Saturday May 8th, 2011. This will help alleviate any confusion. Listing the date like this: Saturday, May 8th, 2010. You can even say evening or day if you want, but that's usually not necessary.
Finally, tell your friends and family to save the date! And that's about all you need. Of course, the more details you can share on your fridge magnets, the better, especially if you have a location in mind. If you're having a destination wedding, this is especially important. "John & Yoko are engaged! Save the date Saturday, December 31st, 2010 for our wedding in Hawaii!" works very well. I can only imagine the funny save the date magnets you could come up with this wedding!
The cliche's are certainly done. You know, these: We're getting hitched! We're taking the plunge! We're tying the knot! We're making it official! And so on. Stick with the basic information for the save the date wording and add it to a unique and interesting photo of you two and you'll get a much better response. If you must say something silly, make it more personal so it fits you two. If you love something in particular, or if you have a theme (Hawaii=We're getting Maui'd! almost passes mustard), say something with that in mind. Save the date magnets don't have to be the same old same old. They can be unique and interesting if you make them about you.
Now, what you really want to concentrate on is the wording for your actual formal invites. These can still be fun, but you will need to give them some formal feel especially in contrast to your save the dates. YOu can even focus on cheap save the date magnets here. Your Invitations will reflect more on how you want your wedding's atmosphere to be, whether it's classy, romantic, cute, fun, etc. but that is another topic for another article.
Your wording should not be the focus of your wedding save the date magnets. Basic information is what you're going for here, names, specific date, including the actual day of the week, the actual occasion (wedding, in this instance) and finally, location, especially if you're going the destination route. Always enhance your wording with humor, making them funny save the date magnets. Keep the information basic yet pointed and focus your attention on the picture and attitude of your save the date magnets and you'll be on the right track.
